The foundation of digital transformation can be broadly categorized into three main areas:

  1. Data: Data is the lifeblood of digital transformation. To leverage digital technologies and drive business growth, companies need to have access to high-quality data and use data analytics tools to gain insights into customer behavior, market trends, and operational efficiency. Netflix is a prime example of a company that uses data to drive its business model. By analyzing user data, Netflix is able to make personalized recommendations for each viewer, which has helped it grow to over 200 million subscribers. Additionally, Netflix uses data to inform its content creation strategy, leading to hit original series like “Stranger Things” and “The Crown”.
  2. Technology: Technology is the key enabler of digital transformation. Companies need to invest in digital technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to create new business models, improve operational efficiency, and enhance customer experiences. Amazon is known for its use of technology to transform the retail industry. By leveraging cloud computing and machine learning algorithms, Amazon has been able to create a highly personalized shopping experience for its customers. For example, Amazon’s recommendation engine uses machine learning to suggest products based on a customer’s browsing history and purchase history.
  3. People: People are the driving force behind digital transformation. Companies need to invest in hiring and training digital talent to lead and execute digital transformation initiatives. This includes data scientists, UX designers, software developers, and other digital professionals who can drive innovation and experimentation. General Electric (GE) is a company that has invested heavily in digital talent to drive its digital transformation initiatives. In 2012, GE launched its “Industrial Internet” initiative, which focused on using data analytics and IoT technologies to improve the efficiency of its industrial equipment. To support this initiative, GE hired over 1,000 data scientists and engineers, and invested $1 billion in its software development capabilities.

Overall, these examples illustrate how companies can leverage data, technology, and people to drive digital transformation and create new business opportunities. By investing in digital talent, adopting emerging technologies, and using data to inform decision-making, companies can transform their business operations and stay competitive in the digital age.
